Énergie renouvelable Brookfield est honorée pour sa contribution à l'économie du Massachusetts

Marlborough, MA, November 24, 2009 – Brookfield Renewable Power will be honored today by MassEcon, a private, non-profit partnership of business and government leaders, for the company’s positive impact on the Massachusetts economy. Brookfield will be honored with a silver award for the economic contribution the company has made to the Central Massachusetts economy.

“We’re honored to be recognized by MassEcon and thrilled to be part of a community that features such a broad base of forward-thinking companies and research organizations,” said Kim Osmars, Chief Operating Officer of Brookfield Renewable Power’s U.S. Operations. “Locating our U.S. headquarters in Marlborough has not only been about building a state-of-the art control center and opening a new office, it has been about the people we’ve hired and the community we’re now proud to call home.”

Brookfield will receive the silver award at the Sixth Annual Team Massachusetts Economic Impact Awards luncheon at the Seaport Hotel Boston. It is the only awards event of its kind in Massachusetts, honoring companies from across the Commonwealth for their outstanding contributions to the Massachusetts economy.

Brookfield Renewable Power is a leading owner, operator and developer of renewable power in North America, with a strong presence in hydropower and a growing interest in wind.

Since early in 2008, the company has secured 25,000 square feet of office space and commenced a $12.7 million build-out to accommodate its U.S. headquarters and National System Control Center in Marlborough, MA. The new headquarters will soon remotely control and dispatch the company’s 100 green power facilities located across nine U.S. states.

The company operates the Bear Swamp (also known as the Jack Cockwell) Pumped Storage plant in the Berkshires, which is the 8th largest plant by capacity in the Commonwealth. Today, the company employs just under 100 people in Massachusetts.

The MassEcon winners were chosen after a reception where finalist companies presented their attributes in the categories of job growth, facility expansion, investment, and community involvement since January 1, 2008.

Jerry Sargent, Executive Vice President of Citizens Bank and MassEcon Chair said, “The Team Massachusetts Economic Impact Awards allows us to honor companies not only at a state level, but those that are making waves worldwide. These honorees are strengthening the foundation of the state’s economy.”

Susan Houston, Executive Director of MassEcon, observed that the process of selecting the winners was extremely difficult. “All the companies nominated enhance the Massachusetts economy, and the judges did not arrive at their decision lightly.”
